Climate finance redefinition rips up UK promise to world's most vulnerable says Christian Aid

Responding to the Government announcing it was redefining how it spent international climate finance today, Sophie Powell, Christian Aid's Chief of Advocacy and Policy, said:

"The UK’s climate finance pledge to deliver £11.6bn was a litmus test of its commitment to those on the front line of the worsening climate crisis, based on the UK’s historic responsibility for contributing to global heating. Having promised to honour this pledge when it was thrown into question in the summer, today’s ‘delivery plan’ from the government has ripped it up.

"Today’s statement looks like an exercise in double counting. Plus it enables more of the finance to be delivered through loans and through mechanisms with a poor record in getting finance to the poorest countries and communities bearing the brunt.  As COP28 nears, where the UK used to lead on climate, it is now lowering the bar at every turn, which is a disaster for the world’s most vulnerable people."
