Christian Aid response to reports that UK Overseas Territories facilitated the undermining of North Korea sanctions

Responding to the story  in today's Guardian that companies registered in the British Vigin Islands have helped to breach US sanctions on North Korea, Simon Kirkland, Christian Aid's Parliamentary and Political Adviser, said:

“This extremely disturbing case suggests that UK tax haven secrecy not only enables criminals and tax avoiders to prosper, it makes the world more dangerous for everyone. It’s almost five years since the then UK Prime Minister asked our tax havens to consider opening up. The UK Government should finally insist that they adopt the same transparency standards as the rest of the UK. Today MPs are debating the Government’s Sanctions Bill in the House of Commons. MPs should be pressing the government to do the right thing on this.”
