Christian Aid UK has warned the Prime Minister’s commitment to spend an extra £1bn for climate finance by 2025, if the economy grows as forecast, is “a drop in the ocean” and is calling for $500 billion over 2020-24 from world leaders.
Jennifer Larbie, UK Advocacy and Policy Lead for Christian Aid said:
“The Prime Minister’s commitment is not enough to help the hundreds of millions of people unprotected from the climate crisis. It amounts to little more than a drop in the ocean.
“To take spending from an already reduced aid budget will jeopardise aid to areas such as healthcare and supporting girls’ education around the world. This approach of robbing Peter to pay Paul just won't cut it.
“The planet needs a firm commitment of $500 billion over 2020-24, with at least half to support communities’ adaptation to the climate crisis. Be in no doubt, it is by this measure the COP26 climate talks will be judged.”
