Climate Action Tracker findings a 'screaming siren'

In response to the latest findings from Climate Action Tracker, published today at 2pm GMT, Dr Kat Kramer, Christian Aid's climate policy lead, said:

“The new state of play analysis from Climate Analytics serves as yet another screaming siren that we are far from where we need to be to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. It is appalling that there is still a gap to a 2030 pathway that is consistent with the 1.5C goal promised in Paris, and even worse, that all recent pledges only add up to a 15-17% reduction of the gigatonne gap, with emissions still around twice as high as necessary for the 1.5°C limit.

‘Countries need to agree in Glasgow to remove any reference to 2C and recognize the importance of limiting cumulative emissions through phasing out fossil fuel emissions, and ending and reversing deforestation through ecosystem restoration. The scale of the ambition gap means that as well as needing to formally enhance their pledges every 5 years, countries, especially G20 countries, need to increase their ambition annually until the 1.5C gap is closed. It is imperative that countries recognise the need to end the fossil fuel era: this would be a fist for the UNFCCC and would be a significant signal to global investors to avoid financing planetary destruction.

“In the longer term, countries need to recognize the fundamental interconnectedness of life on earth and the whole planetary system. In so doing, there is more scope to recognize, plan and implement climate action that has the co-benefits for wider sustainability, including food, water and biodiversity, rather than following false solutions that give lifelines to the fossil fuel industry. The IPCC has shown this is possible. Countries need to make it a reality”
