Christian Aid responds to cabinet reshuffle

Pete Moorey, Christian Aid's head of UK advocacy and campaigns, said: "The scale of the challenges facing the new Foreign Secretary are immense. Conflict, climate change and Covid have led to the first rise in extreme poverty for decades and require a response of equal measure - with poverty eradication at the centre of the UK's response.

"With the new Secretary of State coming from the Department of Trade, it is vital that the UK draws on all the tools at its disposal including foreign policy, trade, and development aid to effectively tackle the global issues of poverty, climate, conflict, and insecurity.

"Top of the new Foreign Secretary’s in tray must be ensuring that the COP in Glasgow is inclusive and delivers for communities on the frontline of the crisis, rapid action is taken on the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, vaccine inequity across the world is finally grasped, and trust and confidence is restored following the damage done by the cuts to overseas aid. Christian Aid stands ready to work with the new Secretary of State on these challenging issues."
